But what exactly is the story behind The Great Escape and its associated initiatives? Let's delve into the remarkable work being carried out in Grimsby and the surrounding areas.

Creative Start: Breaking Barriers, Fostering Connection

Founded in 2012, Creative Start emerged with the aim to dismantle barriers, combat loneliness, and provide opportunities for some of the most vulnerable communities in Grimsby. The heart of their endeavour lies in supporting, enhancing, and advocating recovery from addiction, all spearheaded by individuals with lived experience of overcoming addiction.

Members of Creative Start are encouraged to channel their energies into art and social interaction, fostering trust and personal growth while nurturing a sense of positive well-being. Through a plethora of workshops, hands-on training sessions, and creative activities, the project equips its participants with invaluable skills, providing access to essential resources for crafting, exhibiting, and even selling their artwork.

The Great Escape: A Beacon of Restoration

‘The Great Escape’ stands as a testament to historical restoration and community empowerment. Nestled within Grimsby’s docks, this unique project is breathing new life into an erstwhile building, transforming it into a vibrant creative hub. Once fully complete, members will have access to workshop facilities, a communal kitchen, and a space conducive to social engagements, meetings, and collaborative ventures.

As an integral component of The Great Escape's evolution, Creative Start has birthed the ‘Blackgull Community Venue’ – a haven for those in recovery and a sanctuary for the wider community. Beyond offering a safe and welcoming environment, this venue boasts a small library, an array of board games, and amenities such as Wi-Fi access and a community kitchen. Moreover, through its 'pay it forward' scheme, it fosters a culture of kindness and reciprocity.

A Beacon of Hope for Grimsby

As ‘The Great Escape’ continues to evolve and flourish, propelled by the collective efforts of individuals and organisations like Blackrow, it stands poised to become not just a creative sanctuary, but a beacon of hope for all those navigating the path to recovery in the area.

Through their involvement in projects such as this one, Blackrow reaffirms its commitment to fostering positive change and supporting the well-being of communities in North East Lincolnshire.
